VSC Part 2: Heavy Handed by Austin Furtak-Cole at the Red Mill Gallery

Everyone working at the Vermont Studio Center is an artist - except for the chef Mark, which is fine because Mark is awesome.  I especially enjoyed this work by Austin, who is also awesome.

There is a lovely relationship between a very contemporary illustrative/street art style paired with hands that reference Italian Renaissance painting.  The intimate scale of these works, all around 12 x 12 inches, secure  subtle suggestions of thoughts and emotions tied to each work.  Heavy Handed is an appropriate title; descriptive of the heavy nature of hands of the artist and those that have been painted, as well as suggestive of a weighty theme within the work - to understand experience & meaning through the process of art making.  Austin leaves his statement with relinquishing, "the control I might never have had in the first place."
